Cirque du Soleil comes back to Houston, this time with KOOZA, focusing on acrobats and clowns. It’s a perfect fit with Colin Heath, a trained acrobat and clown from Canada, who readily admits he was always “good at goofing off.” Heath was with Cirque in the early years and left it for work in film, TV and stage for 20 years (as an actor, comedian and playwright) before returning for KOOZA. As Cirque has grown over the years from its more circus-tent-like beginnings, it has developed more stage-based shows to stay fresh, Heath said. This show has special appeal, he said, “because clowns do have a strong connection with the audience. But these aren’t your normal run-of-the mill clowns,” he added. “We’re more verbal than most clowns,” he said, which made things very interesting when they did a lengthy tour of Japan — they had to follow their phonetically learned script very closely. Unfettered in an English-speaking country, Heath and his fellow clowns say Houston audiences can look forward to a whole lot of improvisation. Audience participation is another big part of their shows, so come prepared.
