BooTown's Emily Hynds says the company's latest show, Damn the Man, is an effort to set the record straight. A Benshi-style reworking of the coming-of-age film Empire Records that follows a group of young people working in a record store, Damn the Man throws out the movie's idealistic tone and replaces it with one that's ''less happily-ever-after and more when-people-stop-being-polite-and-start-getting-real.''
Benshi is a Japanese tradition in which performers memorize western movies, reinterpreting them for an eastern audience. Participating in the retelling here are BooTown Co-Artistic Director Lindsay Burleson, Christopher Oddo, Jillian Van Zelfden, Stephen Walker and David Feil, who performs the soundtrack live.
