Frankenstein: The New Musical

Not to be confused with Mel Brooks’s irreverent tuner, also from 2007, Frankenstein, A New Musical — also about you-know-who and what he reanimates using a bolt of lightning and various dead body parts — is an earnest retelling of Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic shocker, with plenty of singing but not much dancing.

More About

Full of stirring anthems (“Your Father’s Eyes,” “The Modern Prometheus,” “The Hands of Time”), as if the creative team had reanimated Frank Wildhorn, the musical at least starts off with an appreciative nod to Shelley by having the forlorn and ailing Dr. F picked up in the frigid waters of the Arctic, where he has chased his creature after the “fallen angel” has decimated his family and murdered his fiancée.

Told in flashback and high-powered Broadway ballads, the musical has an elemental electricity thanks to Shelley’s vivid imagination, while the doctor’s love affair with Elizabeth plays second fiddle to the much more intense love/hate relationship between Victor and his very wayward “son.” This show features music by Mark Baron and text and lyrics by Jeffrey Jackson.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 31. Continues through Sept. 23, 2012
