More About

Emily Sloan saw some unusual things at the last Funeral Party she hosted, especially when it came to the party's funeral pyre. One man read a seven-page discourse on the destructive role drugs played in his life, then threw his remaining drug paraphernalia into the fire. Another man, who had a long braid hanging down his back, discussed how much better his life had become since he'd moved to Houston. He cut off his hair and threw it into the fire as well. The meaning and purpose of the party are different things for different people. Some see it as a way to say good-bye to the troubles of the previous year; others consider it a way to clean the slate in anticipation of the coming year. ''I think of it as a new beginning, but also as a reminder to use my time wisely,'' Sloan tells us. She'll be on hand to help participants write eulogies at 6 p.m., then officiate over the proceedings. After the readings and funeral pyre, it's a potluck dinner. Mourning attire is encouraged, but we’re guessing no one will mind if you wear a party dress.
