Guilty Crown

There's a reason that the weekly anime screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse have endured for years as a Houston staple: Coordinator Rommel Salandanan has a knack for getting the best A-List anime titles and sleeper hits. This week he's got Guilty Crown, a 2011 series that follows high school student Shu Ouma after he mysteriously develops the power to extract psychic weapons from people's souls. (We'll wait a minute if you need to read that again. Anime story lines can be so hard to follow.) A chance encounter with a young pop star who's secretly involved with a resistance movement prompts Shu to use this ability to help restore Japan's independence after a United Nations force declares tyrannical sovereignty following a devastating plague. What makes Guilty Crown such a not-miss series? ''I would probably say the stunning graphics of this 22-episode series, along with an intriguing budding romance and how the characters have to make constrained decisions due to their dilemma,'' Salandanan tells us by e-mail.
