For the first time in its 32-year history, the Houston Center of Photography's Print Auction will be auctioning off a video. Reflections 81717, a time-lapse video by Pablo Gimenez-Zapiola, will be among the more than 80 pieces up for grabs at the auction, which supports HCP's exhibitions, educational initiatives and outreach programs. ''People are excited about that,'' HCP Executive Director Bevin Bering Dubrowski tells us. The auction features a wide variety of images, including a landscape from Will Michels, an artist usually known for his portraits, titled 11 Miles West on State Highway 21, San Aubustine, Texas.
There are also ''quite a few wonderful vintage prints,'' says Dubrowski, including Rouzat (Flying Apparatus), a 1910 photograph by Jacques Henri - Lartigue printed in the 1950s that shows a primitive plane about to take off. Other highlights include Geoff Winningham's iconic Lamé Pants, which captures the backside of two cowgirls at the 1972 rodeo; and Nici Jost's humorous Once Upon a Sunny Afternoon, which features Peter Pan giving a fierce uppercut to Pinocchio.
