When you think of the music of The Wizard of Oz, you probably think of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s Oscar-winning “Over the Rainbow.” (The performance by a teenage Judy Garland is wonderful, isn’t it?) It’s easy to forget that the orchestral score by Herbert Stothart also picked up an Academy Award, with the ending of his composition “Cyclone,” heard during the Wicked Witch of the West’s various misdeeds, becoming one of the most famous villain motifs ever.

The Houston Symphony, led by conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, celebrates Stothart’s enduring musical accomplishment in a live performance as the classic film plays on the giant screen above them. Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr’s vocal tracks have all been isolated from their original recordings and will be backed by the full power of the orchestra during the film’s musical moments. 7:30 p.m. 615 Louisiana.
