Houston Symphony: Wizard of Oz

When you think of the music of The Wizard of Oz, you probably think of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s Oscar-winning “Over the Rainbow.” (The performance by a teenage Judy Garland is wonderful, isn’t it?) It’s easy to forget that the orchestral score by Herbert Stothart also picked up an Academy Award, with the ending of his composition “Cyclone,” heard during the Wicked Witch of the West’s various misdeeds, becoming one of the most famous villain motifs ever.
