“While many quilters are indeed grandmothers, we have seen in the past five years or so a big influx of younger women in their twenties and thirties getting involved in quilting, sewing, knitting and other needle arts,” says Bob Ruggiero, spokesperson for Quilts, Inc., the event organizer and frequent Houston Press contributor. “More and more people are realizing that, yes indeed, quilting is an artform on its own.” In the festival’s grand competition, Quilts: A World of Beauty, finalists from the annual judged show of the International Quilt Association vie for more than $100,000 in cash prizes.
