Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's genre-bending musical based upon the last seven days of the life of Christ, Jesus Christ Superstar (1971), finally gets the staging and venue Webber always intended for it — the rock arena. And thanks to technology, viewers can sit in a nice, air-conditioned movie theater to watch it.
A provocative mixture of the sacred and the profane, the original Jesus Christ Superstar ran for a year and a half on Broadway. It was outmatched by London's West End production, which played for eight years. This JCS is a filmed version of the freshly conceived UK arena tour that just ended its profitable run this month. It features a veritable who's who of Empire stars: British telly idol Ben Forster as Jesus; Australian comedian and author Tim Minchin as Judas; radio DJ Chris Moyles as mincing Herod; and — hold onto your sandals — Sporty Spice, a.k.a. Melanie Chisholm, as Mary Magdalene.
The ''re-imagined rock spectacular'' will be broadcast today to movie theaters around the world and later released on DVD.
Today's screening is being held at various theater's throughout Houston. Check the website for a complete listing of locations.
