Lit Fuse: Yerra Sugarman, Layla Benitez-James and Elizabeth Winston

The reading series Lit Fuse celebrates National Poetry Month with a program of three remarkable poets. First is Yerra Sugarman, author of the collections Forms of Gone and The Bag of Broken Glass. There's a good reason she was awarded a 2011 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Poetry. Her work is often as dark as a biblical prophecy, but it features an intense sense of beauty. ''Through the Portholes of the Eyes,'' in which Sugarman remembers watching her mother die in the hospital and fearing that in her passing she would utterly forget her daughter, is haunting.

Also on the schedule are two University of Houston MFA poetry students, Layla Benitez-James and Elizabeth Winston. Benitez-James in particular is a treasure to hear read, with her soft, shy voice and predilection for gentle terms.
