Lord of Illusions

Clive Barker is known for penning some of the best weird horror tales ever put to paper, but occasionally he branches out as a film director, with amazing results. His movie Lord of Illusions follows the exploits of detective Harry D’Amour, a hardboiled sleuth with a penchant for the occult. He ends up on the trail of a Charles Manson-esque cult leader who has mastered demonic magic, and gets pulled into a world where illusions are as real as gunfire and twice as dangerous.

The movie is among the best adaptations ever of Barker’s work, no small feat considering that it stands against Candyman and Hellraiser, and mixes true Hollywood noir with terrifying horror in a way that makes it stand out even today, when supernatural detective stories rule the world of fiction. This is the perfect film to close out the West Oaks Drafthouse, which shuts its doors the next day, leaving only the Katy location to serve Houston until 2013, when its new Northwest and Midtown locations open.
