Lunge Dance Collective

One of the great byproducts of talent-based reality shows is that previously unknown performers gain a platform to begin their own creative projects, even if they don’t come out the big winner. Billy Bell, a contestant on the seventh season of So You Think You Can Dance, is a primary example. The ballet-trained dancer came in sixth, but since then he’s started his own company, the Lunge Dance Collective. Bell’s group is made up largely of emerging dancers. In terms of artistic direction, the goal is to create experimental choreography that has its foundation in logic. The troupe comes to Houston today with the evening-length program You’ll Never Be Alone.

The piece is as much a multimedia installation as it is a dance concert. In the world’s first talking picture, the audience examines an enigmatic character known as Dr. Caligari. Is he friend or foe? Hero or villain? His world is one of indefinite complexities. Bell’s choreography is not just a character study of Dr. Caligari but an investigation of what humans are willing to sacrifice in the name of progress. 8 p.m. 800 Bagby.
