Some artists take themselves very, very seriously. Thankfully, photographer Lynn Lane and painter Melanie Loew aren't among them. ''Lynn Lane & Melanie Loew: Cats, Bunnies, and the Surface Value of It All,'' a new exhibit by the pair, is a showcase of portraits of people posing with either cats or rabbits. Lane, who was profiled in the 2011 Houston Press 100 Creatives series, said of the images, ''[We] try to look beyond the surface of an image and try to impose deep meaning into a piece of art when, at times, it truly can be exactly what you see, a man or woman holding someone else's cat. It can be merely a documentation of a moment in time of two beings who have never met coming together for an odd 'family' portrait of sorts.'' Loew echoes the sentiment. ''It's just not that deep. They are what they are. 'Surface value' means there is nothing to dig up.''
