''Margaret Miller: Sky, Trees and Earth''

Artist Margaret Miller is the focus of Archway Gallery’s exhibit “Sky, Trees and Earth.” As the title suggests, landscapes are the central motif, but if Miller’s locales look familiar, that’s because they should. The North Carolina native has lived in Houston for more than 20 years and has a visual affinity for her adopted state. The oil paintings on display frame the beauty of places like Brazos Bend State Park and the Texas Hill Country. Her creative process includes spending time in nature and taking photographs of her subjects. The results are gorgeous paintings that render even the most recognizable places fresh and new.

Miller’s Texas scenes are unusual in that she employs techniques of Impressionism, a movement that began in Paris in the 1870s. “I like to investigate the sense of emotions that can be tapped with the use of color. The style that is most dear to my heart is Impressionism. I like to work in oils, capturing the play of light, tone, color and atmosphere rather than details,” she explains via press materials.

The show is on display August 7 through 31, with an opening reception 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, August 11. Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
