What David Lynch did on film and H.P. Lovecraft did with prose, Gregory Crewdson does with photographs. Showing the hidden surreal side of small-town America, his works require massive sets, some outdoors in real locations, some on large soundstages. Director Ben Shapiro's documentary look at just how Crewdson goes about making his masterpieces is being seen in Houston for the first time in MFAH Film Premieres: Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. The film, which took Shapiro more than a decade to shoot, gives us an inside look not only into his work process but his private life as well. Crewdson is seen on screen regaling viewers with personal stories.
