Here in the South we all seem to have two things in common — a relative with an incredible dessert recipe that is kept super top-secret and another relative who has snapped while doing something very ill-advised to a romantic rival. These staples of Southern family life come together in Red Velvet Cake War. A family reunion in Sweetgum, Texas, on the hottest day in July is marred (or vastly improved upon, depending on your outlook) by a combination of romance, jilted lovers, gambling and animal hijinks. Janis Drake stars as Gaynelle Verdeen, a woman with one last shred of sanity who decides to vent her frustration with her husband’s new girlfriend by, accidentally, of course, plowing her minivan into the side of the other woman’s double-wide trailer. Since the law frowns upon such things, she must subsequently prove her sanity to a court-appointed psychiatrist. Managing the bevy of crazed cousins invited to the family reunion turns out to be the perfect test for her. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sunday. Through August 12.
