Scriptwriters/Houston 22nd Annual Ten by Ten Showcase

Ten is the magic number at Scriptwriters/Houston’s Ten by Ten Showcase. The annual production features ten ten-minute shorts by some of the finest playwrights in Houston. The plots range in tone from the emotionally dramatic to the amusingly absurd. In As We Knew It by L. Robert Westeen, the audience is witness to the perpetual cycle of life and death through linked stories. That work’s solemn tone will make a good contrast to the comedic scenario of Map of the Atoms of the Universe by Nicholas Garelick, which sees two friends battling it out over a technological invention with the potential to change the world.

More than 50 Houston-area theater professionals will contribute to this year’s production, which also includes some city-specific material. In A Bag of Ice by Fernando Dovalina, a woman goes to a convenience store determined to buy the last bag of ice in Houston. The recollection of Hurricane Ike is inescapable. As a bonus, the showcase will also feature eight original monologues by Steve Carpentier, Rachel Dickson, Pressley Giles, Gail Greenberg, Eric C. Jones, Jane Keep and Pat Morgan. 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Country Playhouse, 12802 Queensbury Lane.
