The Hindu deity Hanuman is the focus of Shunya Theatre’s latest production, The Adventures of Hanuman, featuring a largely youth cast, along with local adult actors and composers. Staged at the Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, Aditi Kapil’s children’s musical tells the story of how the monkey god is done with being teased by his friends, who laugh at him because of his unbelievable tall tales. But Hanuman is only just getting started. The audience follows the protagonist as he spins a yarn of the world’s creation, loosely based on the ancient Sanskirt epic The Ramayana.
Shunya Theatre is a South Asian theater company and one of the most active of its kind in the country, and Hanuman is the culmination of a summer’s worth of rehearsals for the participating youth. The production will also feature Bollywood-inspired choreography by Infused Performing Arts of Stafford, which is sure to add a cool, contemporary flavor to this classic Indian story. 8 p.m. Fridays. 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
