When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?

It was Children of a Lesser God that established Mark Medoff as an important American playwright in 1980, but it was his thriller When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder? that first captured the attention of New York critics in 1974. The setting is a quiet and low-key roadside diner in 1960s New Mexico. Business has become slow thanks to a new highway development that diverted traffic, but a few regular customers still manage to drop by. The daily monotony is disrupted when a strange couple makes an appearance. Teddy is a Vietnam War veteran, and his girlfriend Cheryl is a free-spirited flower-child. It soon becomes clear that Teddy is looking for more than just a bite to eat when he starts to harass the staff and other diners. Eventually, with blood-chilling accusations, Teddy angrily reveals the characters' darkest secrets. The Texas Repertory Theatre production includes performances by several Houston favorites, including Travis Ammons, Ted Doolittle, Katrina Ellsworth, Alan Hall and Lendsey Kersey.
