Meloncon, who has had his work produced off-Broadway, says the message of the play is about appreciating the past. For many, 1965 is unique in that it's a time in American history when the civil rights struggle and popular music were closely interlinked. ''I hope that [people] come to enjoy the great music of the 1960s,'' said Meloncon, ''and understand how significant it was in terms of the lyrics and how it spoke to the time.''
The musical is filled with hit songs from the era, including ''(Love is Like a) Heatwave,'' made popular by Martha & the Vandellas, ''Please Mr. Postman,'' sung by the Marvelettes, and ''My Girl,'' a signature tune for The Temptations.
