Flag-waving 4th of July celebrations don't come much bigger than Houston's annual Freedom Over Texas party at Eleanor Tinsley Park, an event said to be seen by an audience in the hundreds of thousands both on TV and in person. Okay, okay, everybody knows the ginormous fireworks show is the main attraction, but don't forget about the music – and there's enough of it that it would be hard to do that. Headlining the main stage is pop-country heartthrob Billy Currington ("People Are Crazy") and two-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Sara Evans ("Born to Fly"), but check out the pedigree on openers the Ernest Walker Band: The vocalist from Santana (Andy Vargas), a percussionist from Beyoncé's band (Houston native Marcie Chapa), saxman Eric Demmer (B.B. King, Delbert McClinton), and vocalists Tamar Davis (Tyler Perry, Prince) and Brent Carter (Average White Band). Whatever soul/funk/R&B explosion they come up with ought to make it worth showing up early. Music will be scattered elsewhere across Tinsley, plus, there will be about every kind of family-type activity you would expect at an Independence Day festival: face-painting, dancing from the SoReal Cru and HaviKoro groups, the "Walmart All-American Kids Zone," memorabilia from the Military Museum of Texas, and more. Including the fireworks.
