Lou Ann Barton has a voice that could shame the devil. The Fort Worth native's barbecued drawl makes it clear she is not a woman to be trifled with, but she can belt out a broken-hearted ballad with the best of them. She also has a special touch with Gulf Coast swamp-pop nuggets such as Slim Harpo's "Te Ni Nee Ni Nu" and Barbara Lynn's "You'll Lose a Good Thing," both of which appeared on her 1989 album Read My Lips. A linchpin of the Austin blues community since the mid-'70s, when she sang in Triple Threat with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Austin soul legend W.C. Clark, Barton was inducted into the Austin Chronicle's Texas Music Hall of Fame in 1991. Her recordings have been sporadic since then (most recently 2002's Someday), but she has spent the past several years as the featured vocalist in Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-a-Whirl band, a guaranteed show-stopper with her rendition of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "In the Middle of the Night." Saturday night, with Vaughan elsewhere, she'll be at the Tilt-a-Whirl controls.
