Kickstarter is all the rage these days for independent artists looking to raise dough to make both their dreams and the dreams of their fans come true. Houston's own Craig Kinsey and thelastplaceyoulook are currently running Kickstarter campaigns, and avant-garde popper Amanda Palmer ended up raising more than $1.2 million from fans to release a new album. Palmer was alternately applauded and denigrated for capitalizing on her rabid fanbase. The spoils of her Kickstarter, the new Theatre Is Evil, came out last week to the adoring reviews of Palmer's army of fans, who have been on board since her Dresden Dolls days — though her biggest fan is probably her husband, fantasy writer Neil Gaiman. The pair no doubt make for a a one-stop shop of wonderment at dinner parties.
