Cinco de Mayo

Celebrating Mexican culture with family-friendly events and lots of parties.

Cinco de Mayo is here again, so visit your local watering hole for a good dose of Mexican culture — which means family fun, music you can move to and of course, margaritas, tequila and cervezas. Whether you're saluting your Mexican heritage or just trying to have a good time, there are plenty of places to party this Cinco de Mayo.

The Fiesta de Cinco de Mayo at the Children's Museum of Houston lasts all week long, with most activities scheduled daily, but there's a special appearance by Las Américas Ballet Folklórico at 3 p.m. on May 4. Decked out in full traditional garb, the company's young dancers perform regional Mexican dances. Daily activities include games (Lotería, which is similar to Bingo), craft projects (create a Macaroni Sombrero, paint a Mexican tile and weave an Ojo de Dios), and more. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, and Free Family Night 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Fiesta Universal in The Woodlands

For those who want to see the cultural side of Cinco de Mayo, Fiesta Universal is a family-friendly event with free entry. Visitors can also pay $20 for a chance to taste food from all the vendors and receive two drink tickets. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Three Amigos Quote-Along. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short star as three unemployed and clueless actors who get in trouble south of the border. Watch the film outdoors in Market Square and feel free to quote along with the dialogue. Free.

Cinco de Mayo Parade

Get a taste of Mexican culture at the annual LULAC Cinco de Mayo Parade. Some 100 entries, including local marching bands, dance troupes, mariachi bands, classic car clubs and more, line up starting at 10 a.m. at Minute Made Park and wind their way through downtown, ending at Preston and Crawford around noon. Free.

The Cadillac Bar will start its Cinco de Mayo celebrations a day early with live music by the Vu Du Kingz, as well as a taco stand, prize giveaways, buckets of beer, aguas frescas and access to the Kemah Boardwalk's International Beer Festival.

El Pueblito

Head over to El Pueblito to celebrate a different kind of Mexican holiday — Cinco de Mango. The Latin rock band Mango Punch! will be presenting its annual Cinco de Mayo performance there for your listening pleasure from 7 to

HOT 95-7's Cinco de Mayo Bomb with The Wanted and Carly Rae Jepsen has had such a terrific response, organizers moved the party over to the Bayou Music Center (don't worry, your House of Blues tickets will be honored). The show starts at 7 p.m. $28.50 to $48.50.

Stop by Hugo's for a traditional Puebla-style buffet, drink specials, live musical entertainment by Hugo's house band Viento, and a performance of ballet folklórico. The event begins at 10 a.m. and runs till 2:30 p.m. Entry is $29 per adult and $12 per child. Gratuity, tax and drink price are not included in the entry fee.
