John Stevens bravely tackles A Christmas Carol at the award-winning Houston Family Arts Center (the center's production of Fiddler on the Roof took home the Best Musical award in this past August's Houston Theater Awards). The show, based on the classic ghost story by Charles Dickens, is a monopolylogue (one actor playing many roles). Much as Dickens did in his time, Stevens performs all of the various characters from the story on a relatively bare stage. Christmas Carol, here a slightly condensed version of Dickens' novella, relies solely on Stevens' acting talent to bring life to the miserly Scrooge and the characters he encounters on his ghostly journey, including the three Christmas Spirits, his former fiancée, Belle, Tiny Tim and the Cratchit family, and all the rest. Houston Press theater writer D. L. Groover said of Stevens' performance last year, “[he] plays them all, or describes the scenes, with consummate skill ... it's a magnificent cast of characters, expertly depicted.”
