Where to Eat on Valentine's Day

This year, Valentine's Day is on a Friday. In other words, everyone will be vying for a reservation at one of the many Houston restaurants offering a special meal on the day of romance. Don't be that guy or gal who forgets to make a reservation in advance, especially if your special someone is expecting a romantic evening with incredible and decadent food.

Let one of these Houston restaurants help you out on Valentine's Day this year. All you have to do is get the flowers and the chocolates and write something sweet in a card; they'll do the cooking for you.

Latin Bites

For $75 per person, Latin Bites will offer a three-course Valentine's dinner featuring pork belly and South American corn dough, duck cannelloni prepared two ways (leg confit and wine demi-glace breast), and a Venezuelan chocolate mousse served with passion-fruit cream and hazelnut gelato. Latin Bites will also serve a complimentary glass of prosecco to each diner.

Brennan's of Houston

Head to Brennan's for a truly romantic evening and enjoy a $75 per person three-course meal between 5 and 9:45 p.m. on Valentine's Day. Brennan's will offer a Matagorda Bay oyster shooter with pickled vegetables before the meal begins. Choose from a variety of starter options, including the crispy oyster BLT, classic turtle soup au sherry or a strawberry wine-poached foie gras torchon with a foie gras mousse-stuffed fig, duck confit and foie gras rillette peanut butter brioche. Entrée selections include dishes such as pecan-crusted mahimahi, lamb chops and Louisiana jumbo lump blue crab cakes. Order the table-side bananas Foster, or indulge your sweet tooth in a strawberry shortcake, strawberry white chocolate cobbler or chocolate Doberge cake plated with mint julep ice cream. You may also order a Mardi Gras Mambo King Cake complete with a Creole cream-cheese filling. Add a bottle of sparkling rosé from Sonoma/Napa for $55, a Russian River Chardonnay for $70 or Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast for $62. Brennan's is also offering a special cocktail made with Godiva chocolate vodka, crème de cacao and dark cherry sirop for $11.

Caracol

Check out the new restaurant from Hugo Ortega this Valentine's Day. Caracol will offer a $79 per person meal complete with a complimentary Champagne toast. Starter options range from creamy corn and poblano soup to garlic mushrooms with griddled bolillo. Enjoy spicy hashed fish turnovers with cilantro cream or small herb-marinated crab tostadas for the second course, and butterflied boneless whole fish wood-grilled in a basket, or fire-roasted lobster served with flour tortillas and playa la ropa beans for the entrée. Choose from a variety of sweet treats, such as the chocolate coconut shell with coconut butter cream, coconut ganache, coconut streusel and whipped coconut, or the assortment of Mexican cookies and chocolates.

Caracol will also offer a Valentine's Day Weekend menu on February 15 and 16 for couples. The entire meal for two costs $105 and includes items such as a shareable tuna ceviche made with plantain, lime and cilantro cream; a watercress salad with grapefruit and avocado; mixed shellfish with frog legs and rice; and ­Ruben's Dessert Platter to share.

Charivari

Choose from two five-course prix fixe Valentine's Day menus at Charivari, each costing $65 per person. The first menu features an amuse-bouche of eggplant with American sturgeon caviar canapés, broiled maple-miso glazed Chilean sea bass with winter greens for the entrée and Swiss hazelnut chocolate tart with homemade bourbon vanilla ice cream for dessert. The second menu begins with Berkshire pork rilletes for the amuse bouche, and grilled filet mignon with Muenster cheese, verjus reduction and roesti potatoes for the entrée. End the meal with a blood orange cobbler and homemade bourbon vanilla ice cream.

Rainbow Lodge

A meal at Rainbow Lodge is unforgettable. Reserve a spot for you and your special someone at this four-course meal for $75 per person on Valentine's Day. Start with Southern fried Texas quail with an acorn squash tart, then move on to a second course of smoked duck gumbo with andouille sausage and wild rice pilaf or a roasted beet salad with butter lettuce, Texas goat feta and fig vinaigrette. For the entrée, enjoy duck prepared two ways (roasted breast and confit leg) or a duo of venison loin with grilled wild boar chop served with jalapeño and French brie bread pudding with brussels sprouts and a wild huckleberry sauce. End on a sweet note with warm croissant bread pudding with bourbon caramel, vanilla-bean ice cream and an almond tuille, or a dark chocolate pot de crème with mint chocolate truffles and a blood orange chantilly.

Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen

Beginning on Monday, February 10, Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen will offer a weeklong Valentine's menu at both locations. The Sweetheart Menu includes an appetizer dish of picomole and an entrée. Choose from carne asada beef fajita steak with a cheese enchilada; a mixed-grill platter for two featuring quail, shrimp, chicken and carne asada; or Sylvia's Enchilada Culinary Tour with four small enchiladas from north and south of the Mexican border for the main course. Dessert options include either a white chocolate or chocolate tres leches cake. Sylvia's will also offer diners a complimentary house margarita if they order off the Sweetheart Menu between 2 and 5 p.m.

Backstreet Cafe

Make it a romantic evening in the backyard at Backstreet Cafe with a four-course meal for $75 per person. Begin with beef carpaccio or pan-seared scallops with a fennel and orange salad, followed by a butter lettuce salad with bacon, hard-boiled egg and a creamy basil dressing, or warm up with a roasted poblano pepper soup with cornbread croutons. Enjoy Texas Gulf shrimp with stone-ground cheese grits for the main entrée, or pan-roasted snapper with a warm couscous salad with orange and grapefruit. Delight yourselves with a sweet vanilla crème brûlée topped with orange whipped crème fraîche, or a deep dark chocolate cake topped with raspberry sauce and chocolate ice cream for dessert.

Backstreet Cafe will also offer a special Valentine's weekend couples' menu on February 15 and 16. Share burrata topped with warm tomato, olives, basil and garlic, then order dirty-rice beignets with andouille sausage and crawfish for an appetizer. Fill up on short ribs risotto or coq au vin blanc served with fingerling potatoes for your entrée. Share Ruben's Dessert Platter, complete with Nutella doughnut holes, chocolate-orange cookies, and miniature versions of crème brûlée and lemon tart. This special weekend dinner menu costs $95 per person.

Hugo's

Kick off this special Valentine's Day meal with a light ceviche verde, followed by crispy potato tacos with napa cabbage, pickled onions and an avocado tomatillo salsa for the second course. Move on to a grilled rack of lamb with red mole sauce and butternut squash puree or a petite strip steak for the main entrée. Top it all off with caramel-filled crepes with dulce de leche ice cream and candied pecans, or milk chocolate and coconut mousse with passion fruit and raspberries. This meal is $75 per person.

Hugo's will offer a special Valentine's Day Weekend menu for $95 per couple. Head over to the Houston favorite on Saturday or Sunday for a scrumptious meal complete with grilled tuna tacos and guacamole, roasted quail with rose petal sauce and Ruben's Dessert Platter to share.

Prego

This Valentine's Day, Prego will begin seating at 5 p.m. for its special three-course dinner for $46 per person. First-course selections include items such as a blue-crab salad with heirloom tomatoes, avocado, local mushrooms and lemon salsa, and beef carpaccio with arugula, tomato and truffle. Entrée options include pan-seared Chilean sea bass with jumbo lump crab meat, tomatoes, spinach and Yukon gold mashed potatoes, and gnocchi with Texas Kobe short ribs topped with a fried egg. Top it all off with devil's food cake and chocolate crémeux with strawberry gelato, an update on the classic chocolate-covered strawberries.

Mockingbird Bistro

Mockingbird's Valentine's Day menu will be offered on Thursday, February 13, and Friday, February 14. The three-course dinner for $65 per person features duck confit and saffron risotto with Gulf shrimp for appetizers, and beef filet with cipollini onion risotto, pan-seared scallops with brussels sprouts and a bouillabaisse with a bountiful variety of crustaceans and fish for the main entrée. Choose from a puff pastry with vanilla cream and strawberries, flourless chocolate cake served with peanut brittle and banana brûlée, chocolate mousse or apple bread pudding for dessert. Enhance the meal with sommelier wine pairings for an additional $30 per person.

Osteria Mazzantini

On both Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15, Osteria Mazzantini will offer a three-course romantic Italian dinner for $65 per person (or $95 per person with wine pairings). Begin with a black winter truffle risotto cooked with braised rabbit and pecorino, or enjoy a light arugula salad with sunchokes and ricotta salata, tossed in a walnut vinaigrette. Then enjoy Texas quail with roasted figs, turnips and polenta, or scallops coated in fennel, served with cauliflower, capers and pancetta, for the entrée. Finally, share (or have one all to yourself) a light champagne panna cotta or pistachio torta with rose cream and candied rose petals for dessert.

Line & Lariat

This $65 per person three-course meal begins with "Hot & Spicy" first-course plate selections such as bacon-wrapped quail prepared like wings served with a cucumber, celery and blue cheese salad, and a mustard-spiced crab cake with scallion rémoulade. The second course, "It's on Fire," includes sage-braised rabbit with serrano peppers and carrot puree, as well as a chile-marinated grilled pork tenderloin. The dessert course, "Cool Down or Heat Up," features roasted cranberry pear tart and pumpkin panna cotta.

Choose from a variety of confections prepared in-house for the dessert. Funky Chicken will offer a Valentine's Day dinner for two featuring a whole chicken, two sides and two buttermilk biscuits with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot rosé for $99.95. Enjoy this meal during the week of Valentine's Day, beginning on Monday, February 10. Side options include mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, funky slaw, roasted baby carrots, brussels sprouts, potato salad, quinoa salad and fries. Of course, no Valentine's meal would be complete without something sweet, so Funky Chicken will have vanilla bread pudding and an "Every Funky Thing" cookie.

Tila's

Carmelo's Italian Restaurant

Etoile Cusine et Bar

If you can't head to Paris for Valentine's Day, make a reservation at Etoile — it's the next best thing to being in France. Etoile will serve a three-course dinner with starter options of tuna tartare, lobster bisque, warm goat cheese salad or seared duck foie gras. Main-course options include Chilean sea bass, scallops with butternut squash, beef tenderloin and beef short ribs (one meal!), or a foie gras-stuffed pheasant breast. The two dessert options are divided into one option for the lady and one for the man (or whatever) — however, you may make your decision as you please. For the madame, Etoile will offer a raspberry and white chocolate entremet with vanilla ice cream, and for the monsieur, Etoile will offer a molten chocolate cake with passion-fruit sauce and coconut sorbet.

Want to be super-romantic this Valentine's Day? Book a cruise for you and your Valentine for $50 per couple. Well, it's not a huge cruise ship. Instead, couples can cruise around ­McGovern Lake on pedal boats after a picnic dinner in Hermann Park. Pinewood Cafe will provide the food for the lunch or dinner. Seatings for lunch will occur between noon and 2 p.m., and dinner seatings are available between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Enjoy hummus and pita chips, falafel and vegetable sticks for the appetizer, followed by picnic-style foods for the main course, such as a hamburger, Caesar or Greek salad or wrap, chicken sandwich, or a special grilled cheese sandwich. Soft-serve parfaits will be served for dessert, as well as chocolates. Purchase beer and wine at the Pinewood Cafe.

Kiran's

If you love long, extravagant dinners, then reserve a date at Kiran's for the six-course dinner for $85. Kiran's will offer a shot of mushroom soup complete with black truffles, chaat masala plantains and a chimichurri sauce for the first course, followed by either baked oysters or sabudana veda (a tapioca pearl patty), with a chutney made with mint and apple for the second course. The third course will be a roasted beet and blood orange salad with spicy cashews, followed by the fourth course (intermezzo) of Champagne and mango sorbet. The main-course selections include tandoor-roasted Colorado lamb, poached domestic Dover sole, and red kidney beans with saffron rice. Finally, if you're not completely stuffed, enjoy mascarpone and Valrhona chocolate ice cream in a white chocolate heart, chocolate-covered strawberries, or milk chocolate and Earl Grey pudding for dessert.

Reserve 101

If you're a couple who loves whiskey, then this is the Valentine's Day dinner for you. Reserve 101 will offer a five-course whiskey-pairing dinner beginning with a Champagne welcome and artisan cheese plate at 8 p.m. Be mindful that this special dinner is open to only 15 couples, so act fast. Each course will be paired with whiskeys from Glenmorangie. Progress from lemon-herb shrimp in a garlic butter sauce and a ten-year original Glenmorangie to white wine cherries prosciutto flat bread with Nectar D'or, followed by strawberry-honey glazed grilled satay with LaSanta and blackened chicken and risotto with Quinta Ruban. Reserve 101 will pair the Glenmorangie Signet with chocolates to conclude this $150 per couple meal.

Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen

Enjoy a cup of gumbo or half a dozen oysters on the half-shell for the first course, followed by a 14-ounce rib eye topped with jumbo lump crab, baked crab Balinese, or grilled market fish topped with either crab or shrimp. Finish the entire meal with key lime pie, white chocolate bread pudding or crème brûlée.

Begin the meal with a selection of foie gras crème brûlée, lobster bisque, baked oysters or a Belgian endive salad with walnuts, then order a main course of honey and tarragon duck breast, lemon sole and seafood vol-au-vent, or a filet mignon with ­cocoa sauce. End on a sweet note with either anise-poached pear with cinnamon and Champagne sabayon or Elias's Surprise. Each party will receive a complimentary glass of sparkling rosé with dessert.

Sorrel Bistro

Fill up your stomachs with a six-course prix fixe meal on Valentine's Day at Sorrel Bistro, or simply order off of the special à la carte menu. The prix fixe menu will begin with seared Gulf Coast scallops served over a potato cake, followed by plates of Texas T wagyu ribeye sashimi, marinated jumbo lump crab cake with avocado, sweet corn sorbet and ossetra caviar, duck confit bruschetta with vanilla oil on rye toast, and slow-roasted prawns with a soft-poached quail egg and crab bisque. Texas de Brazil

If you truly want a feast for Valentine's Day, might we suggest you reserve a spot at Texas de Brazil? Along with meat carved table-side and the never-ending salad bar, you and your date can enjoy special cocktails, such as the Brazilian Rose, made with guava juice, Grand Marnier and cachaça, or the Brazilian Kiss, made with Ciroc vodka, Cointreau, Chambord and lime juice, as well as the special sparkling moscato for the evening from Terra Andina for $10 per glass and $40 a bottle. This à la carte menu features lobster bisque, fried oysters, crab cakes for two, goat cheese salad, chicken piccata, smoked double pork chop, shrimp and cheese grits, and four incredibly sweet and divine desserts: lemon meringue, banana chocolate cake, raspberry cheesecake and dulce de leche parfait.
