#womenfordance

The disparity in the numbers of male versus female dancemakers continues to confound Marlana Doyle, artistic director of the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company. Rather than simply bemoan the gender inequality she sees, Doyle put together #womenfordance, a program featuring work by five female choreographers. The production includes two world premieres. First is The Essence, from Kiki Lucas, who took inspiration from such varied sources as the Brontë Sisters, Mae West and Ginger Rogers for her creation. Also making its debut is The Broken Column by Andrea Dawn Shelley, who looked to Frida Kahlo as her muse. The Island Moving Company provides Suited Up, the third world premiere on the schedule. Choreographer Spencer Gavin Herring created Suited Up, a lighthearted look at how clothes make the man — or, in this case, the woman.

8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 832‑487‑7041 or visit metdance.org.
