Houston Ballet at Miller Outdoor Theatre

It has been ten years since Stanton Welch became artistic director of , and in that decade the company has deepened its repertoire of classical and contemporary works. Houston Ballet’s three evening performances at the Miller Outdoor Theatre showcase the company’s diverse programming as well as the technical and artistic prowess of its dancers.

On the bill is Welch’s Play, a fun, energetic work set to the music of Moby. The techno titan’s 1999 album of the same name provides the backdrop for an exploration of city life, Generation X sensibilities and turn-of-the-century ennui.

The program also includes excerpts of Welch’s most recent work, Sons de L'âme (Sounds of the Soul), which premiered at the Théâtre des ChampsElysées in Paris last October. Created for 16 dancers, the piece is set to the music of Frédéric Chopin and displays the heightened sense of musicality shared by the company; there’s a clear, palpable connection between music and dancer.
