Actor/playwright Steve Martin has updated and adapted Carl Sternheim’s 1910 comedy The Underpants, and as you may have guessed from the title, it is a farce. Louise is pretty, married but neglected, so when her bloomers fall to her ankles in public, assorted lascivious swains take this to be an invitation to the dance and pursue her. As luck would have it, Louise has a spare room to rent. Hilarity ensues, thanks to the experienced direction of Troy Scheid.
While Martin is best known as a comedic actor, he also penned acclaimed plays and has written hit films. Steven Fenley, artistic director of Texas Rep, says, “Martin’s adaptation of this early German farce brings the comedy squarely into our own time with its literate and sophisticated look at fame and gender. All of this is whipped up by Martin into a witty, laugh-out-loud comedy of manners.”
