The Big Easy

5731 Kirby
Houston, TX 77005

Website
Modeled after the blue-collar social and pleasure clubs that dot New Orleans, the Big Easy brings some down-to-earth charm and soul to one of Houston's most off-puttingly high-toned areas. The focus here is on local blues and zydeco artists -- the living legends from Houston's heyday as one of the country's top blues towns -- and the club's high volume level and physical intimacy offer patrons the chance to put these titans under a visual and aural microscope.

The Inside Word on The Big Easy

Live Blues all week, live Zydeco on Sundays, the Big Easy is a gritty throwback to what blues bars should be about: good music rooted in the community. Set near Rice University and almost never charging a cover ($5 at most!), Big Easy draws an eclectic crowd: students, professors, old hippies, recreating moguls, rollerblading dancers, blue and white collar un-stiffs, pool sharks, spinners....all of whom get lost in the musical whirl that is the Big Easy. Bonus: the owner Tom is an opinionated joy, and a book waiting to happen.
