100 Creatives: Chuck Ivy
Chuck Ivy likes surprising himself
What does he do: A research artist is someone with an insatiable desire to discover new ways to create and present art. Chuck Ivy pushes the limitations that define artistic style by combining influences from different mediums such as painting and photography. "I will always be discovering new ways to make art," he says. An artist-in-residence at the University of Houston's Texas Learning and Computation Center, Ivy is pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Practices and Emerging Forms.
Why he enjoys it: It is the anticipation of the unplanned results that gets his endorphins in motion. Ivy sets guidelines for projects, but leaves room for them to develop on their own. "I like surprising myself," Ivy says. His work allows him to explore the unexpected beauty in something as simple as a wooden box, or as technical as writing a computer program, which crams hundreds of images into one shot.
What inspires him: The opportunity to combine serveral materials into a single form drives his art. Working in copy shops led to an obsession with copyright law, which has caused him to explore combinations of already existing works of art. "The concept of illegal art is fascinating."
What is his proudest moment: He opened a huge gallery with Dan Havel during last year's Fotofest at the Lawndale. Ivy was only a first year grad student at UH, and says that the showing was a mark of success, as well as a challenge to continue. "Whatever I do next will have to be that much better," he says.
What's coming next: He's developing an interactive sound and video piece using the 3D visualization theater at UH.
