13th Annual Polish Film Festival

You can still catch several screenings at the 13th Annual Polish Film Festival. On Thursday, it's director Juliusz Machulski's 2010 release Kolysanka (Lullaby). The film chronicles the mysterious disappearances - and equally mysterious reappearances - of several people in a small village. The viewer soon discovers there are vampires in the mix. Machulski juggles styles easily, moving from comedy to horror and back again. Elements that might be frightening in other films are plopped down in the middle of a comedic trap here. Machulski has often said that he set out to make films in every genre that interested him, including crime, science fiction and horror. He had no success with horror until he blended it with comedy; the pairing of fear with laughter proved to be the missing link. Kolysanka screens today at 7 p.m. Screenings continue through Saturday. AMC Studio 30, 2949 Dunvale. For information, call 281-565-1507. Prices vary.
