16th Annual Museum District Day

Touring the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s new Hall of Paleontology with its absolutely mind-boggling displays of more than 60 skeleton mounts is worth every cent of the $15 price, but sometimes it’s simply not in the budget. Ditto the blockbuster shows at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and other cultural treasures in the area. Thanks to 16th Annual Museum District Day, you can see the exhibits and collections for free. Eighteen museums are offering free general admission.

The Houston Museum of African American Culture is keeping things cool with a 30-ton multicolored ice sculpture commissioned for the exhibition ''All Things Bert,'' a selection of work by internationally acclaimed artist Bert L. Long Jr. Over at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, actor James Faulkner performs the story of Trooper Tyrrell D. Biggs, a man who rose from slavery to become a brave and accomplished member of the famed all-black 10th Cavalry. Some locations, like the MFAH, have hands-on activities; others have giveaways scheduled.
