40th Annual Capital One Bank Bayou City Art Festival Downtown

Here are three hints to the event that turns downtown Houston into an outdoor art gallery: It’s among the best 48-hour periods in the Houston arts season. It has a really long name. And it’s a fundraiser in disguise. Aw, you guessed already, it’s the 40th Annual Capital One Bank Bayou City Art Festival Downtown.

Some 300 artists, working in 19 different media, will have works on display. This year’s featured artist is self-taught painter and printmaker Kreg Yingst. Combining illusion and science (interests that run in the family — his grandfather was a magician and his father was a mathematician), Yingst creates paintings and prints that focus on perspective and optical illusions.

Shows by String Theory and other performing arts troupes are on the schedule, along with plenty to eat and drink. (If you’re still wondering about the fundraising part, over the years, the fest has raised more than $2.6 million for local nonprofits.) 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hermann Square, 901 Bagby. For information, call 713-521-0133 or visit wwww.-bayoucityartfestival.com. Free to $12.
