8:10 Assembly

Houston’s Suchu Dance has been putting on thoughtful and creative modern-dance shows since its conception nearly ten years ago. The brainchild of artistic director Jennifer Wood, Suchu has received many prestigious nods, including the Houston Press award for Best Modern Dance Company in 2005. Wood’s latest creation is 8:10 Assembly, a production meant to examine the simple stuff of everyday life. (The name comes from the fact that shows usually start at 8:10 p.m.)

8:10 Assembly depicts what happens on a regular day at rehearsal, with a score that includes recordings of the dancers’ voices. The simple scenes “magnify details in an atmosphere of intimacy, not in using big brushstrokes accompanied by grand music,” according to Wood. But don’t confuse “everyday” with boring. With its inspired choreography, 8:10 Assembly won’t disappoint. 8 p.m. March 7, 8, 14 and 15; 7 p.m. March 16. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, 2201 Preston. For tickets and information, call 713-529-1819 or visit www.suchudance.org. $12 to $20.
Thu., March 6, 7 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., March 16, 3 p.m. Starts: March 6. Continues through March 15, 2008
