Alexander McCall Smith

With his penchant for bow ties and a position teaching medical law at the University of Edinburgh, Alexander McCall Smith might seem an unlikely creator of Precious Ramotswe, the world’s most famous Botswanan detective. McCall Smith, however, was born in modern-day Zimbabwe and spent many years living in Africa, which inspired The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series — the twelfth installment of which is The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party. The books follow a female private eye in rural Botswana, and while they address issues such as abuse and AIDS, they’re best known for McCall Smith’s richly wrought characters, as complex and surprising as the writer himself. McCall Smith will read from and discuss Wedding Party at Brazos Bookstore today. 6:30 p.m. 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-523-0701 or visit Free.
