Another Breed of Service: Luis Carlos Montalván and Until Tuesday
In 2007, Luis Carlos Montalván left the army after 17 years of service. He had seen action in Iraq, where he was deployed to the volatile South Baghdad region and Nineveh province. By the time of his retirement, he had suffered multiple physical injuries as well as a brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder was creeping over him.
It wasn't until he met Tuesday, a service dog, that he began to heal. With the help of his new golden retriever, Montalván worked his way back to health. The bond between the former serviceman and his service dog is chronicled in Montalván's book Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him, which landed on the New York Times bestseller list.
On Saturday, the Alliance Française de Houston (Houston French Alliance) will host both Montalván and Tuesday for a reading and book signing.
The event will be a twofold benefit with Golden Beginnings, a nonprofit golden retriever rescue organization that works to end misunderstandings about dogs who serve.

"This event is to educate the public and give awareness of the dedication of service dogs," French Alliance Executive Director Joanie Patrick tells Art Attack. According to her, service dogs are routinely denied entrance to restaurants and other buildings, despite the fact that they are there to assist their disabled owners. "We want to change the misconception about service dogs for those who don't understand the law."
Saturday at 4 p.m. 427 Lovett Boulevard. Admission is free with a suggested $10 donation. For information, contact the Houston French Alliance at 713-526-1121.
