Art Car's Annual Show Spotlights Sherry Sullivan, aka. A Real Trooper

It's kind of, sort of impossible, in a single blog post, to discuss all 125 artists that will exhibit work in the Art Car Museum's thematic exhibition "RECONSTRUCTION."

Instead, Art Attack will focus on one story that we think is pretty cool.

Sherry Sullivan, an 82-year-old artist and 40-plus-year Houston dweller, was spending a lot of time in and out of nursing homes as she dealt with health setbacks. During recovery, she arranged the delivery of 14 paintings from her "Stations of the Cross" series that she had created more than a half-century ago while at her Chicago-area parish.

She hadn't seen them in more than 50 years. The artworks -- created with oil, acrylic, felt marker, pencil and mixed-media elements -- needed some touching up, which she somehow managed to do during physical rehab. Then she let them go.

The recipient was Houston's Casa Juan Diego, a center founded in 1980 that serves immigrants, refugees and the poor. Sullivan's paintings were later exhibited in the "Hope Dies Last" show; proceeds from the exhibit helped raise funds for the non-profit and "also served as the impetus for a handful of surgeons to volunteer their time on a regular basis to the people served by Casa Juan Diego," Sherry's daughter Molly Sullivan Levitt tells Art Attack.

Sherry Sullivan is the featured artist in "RECONSTRUCTION," which is Art Car's seventh-annual open-call shindig. The paintings displayed in this show are more recent works of Sullivan's that place a high priority on nature themes. "It's her best work yet," says Art Car director Noah Edmundson.

The opening reception for "RECONSTRUCTION" is scheduled to take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, December 17, at Art Car Museum, 140 Heights Boulevard. The exhibit hangs through March 2, 2012. Check out the Art Car Museum website for more information.
