Authors’ Day at Brazos Bookstore

If you’ve ever fantasized about returning to the era of Paris’s famed literary salons, when local writers gathered in cafes to languidly discuss work and life, then you should head over to Brazos Bookstore for Local Authors’ Day, a gathering of Houston’s finest wordsmiths. Sure, it’s not the Left Bank, but the general idea — celebrating the written word and the joy of creativity — is the same. Children’s books authors, like The Wild Texas Stampede writer Margaret McManis and No Pig’s Brain Soup, Please scribe Gail Greenberg, will mix with poets like Ken Jones and memoirists like Rita Heck, whose Stars, Strippers & Presidents documents her interactions with celebrities like Mel Torme and one-time boyfriend Jack Palance. Come for the stories, and stay for the inspiration; after all, if you’re suffering from writer’s block, there’s nothing like a room full of success stories to get you going. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-523-0701 or visit Free.

Sat., Feb. 7, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2009
