Not to be confused with the embarrassing Ken Annakin sex comedy starring Mac Davis, nor the country music song by Canadian Aaron Lines, the romantic comedy Cheaper to Keep Her is the work of Houston-based Je'Caryous Johnson, winner of the 2007 NAACP Trailblazer award. Like a younger Tyler Perry, Johnson has formed his own company, I'm Ready Productions, to produce touring shows of black musicals and plays. He writes the plays himself, often adapting them from his own novels. Cheaper is a feel-good production about divorce, full of romantic complications and ultimate redemption, with the good, sexy guy triumphing and ending up with the good, sexy woman. Formula, yes, but a winning one, one that fills theaters. The beauteous Vivica Fox (Independence Day, Batman) and the very smooth Brian McKnight star. 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 3 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby. For information, call 800-745-3000 or visit www.imreadyproductions.com. March 25-28, 2010
