Its time to celebrate freedom like a true American: shrouded in corporate sponsorship. Chevys Freedom Over Texas with Fireworks presented by Shell (yes, that is the actual title) features volleyball brought to you by Bud Light, a beer garden brought to you by Budweiser, a military museum brought to you by Chevy and plenty more activities for grown-ups and kids, care of other name brands. But theres fun to be had. The event features six stages of music ranging from Latin to bluegrass to rock, including the headlining pop country talents of Sara Evans, Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina and the resurrection of the popular 60s girl group the Shirelles.

Really, though, its all about the fireworks. Each year the pyrotechnics get bigger and better for this event, which is televised statewide. The explosions span the length of the Buffalo Bayou west of the Sabine Bridge and can be seen from any Neartown location. In other words, they can be enjoyed just as easily from a downtown backyard with a few friends, a grill and a cooler full of any beer you choose were just sayin
The fun starts at 4 p.m., with the fireworks scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Eleanor Tinsley Park, 500 Allen Parkway. For information, call 832-393-0868 or visit www.chevysfreedomovertexas.com. $5 to $8.
