UpStage Theatre re-creates the swing era with Club Morocco — a Swing Music Musical. The musical's B-movie "film noir" roots couldn't be more evident, with characters named Chick Valentine, Bobby LaRue, Velvet St. Regis, Butch and Slick Wannabe. There's also Torch Tangier, Nugget Rialto and Frank McCann, the hardboiled dick (that's private investigator-type dick, not the other kind). Director Sean Thompson says: "We're taking you back to the big-band era — complete with an actual big band — for two dozen '40s standards like 'Minnie the Moocher,' 'In the Mood,' 'Jump Jive & Wail,' 'Mambo Swing,' 'I Get a Kick Out of You' and many more."
Club Morocco transforms the theater into a Casablanca-style nightclub. "The audience can dance in the aisles and on our dance floor. Our cast will even teach some swing steps to audience members before and during the show," Thompson adds.
