"Dr. Seuss Wants You!"

It's hard to imagine that the same mind that created the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax and Yertle the Turtle spent time contemplating war and genocide, but it turns out that Dr. Seuss drew many cartoons about some real-life super-grinches: the Nazis. Theodor Seuss Geisel was the head political cartoonist for the paper PM from 1941 to 1943, during which time he produced some 400 editorial cartoons. The new exhibit "Dr. Seuss Wants You!" at the Holocaust Museum will include these editorials and others, including one titled "Measuring Up a Couple of Prospects," showing Hitler at a "ball and chain shop" ordering shackles for "you and me." In another cartoon panel, he shows Hitler fishing with some "phony peace bait," under the headline "When the Sucker Season Opens, Don't You Bite!" (He also drew ads for war bonds with slogans like "You Too Can Sink U-Boats!"). 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through February 1. 5401 Caroline.
