Experimental Eye

Kelly Sears is a brilliant local animator whose collage-based short horror film Once It Started It Could Not End Otherwise was selected for Sundance. This week she curates a screening of some of the best animated shorts in the world for Experimental Eye. “I’m so very excited for this screening!” said Sears. “There are some big legends of experimental -animation in the program along with some contemporary heroes in the field.” Highlights include Frank Mouris’s Frank Film, winner of the 1974 Academy Award for animation; -animation pioneer Len Lye’s Color Cry, which was created through shadows on the film; and computer animation trailblazer Lillian Schwartz’s UFOs, which must be watched with color--enhancing glasses. Newer work -includes -Michael Langan’s Doxology, in which viewers find themselves on a journey through many strange and impossible worlds, and Jodie Mack’s Unsubscribe #1, about turning discarded security envelopes into hypnotic textures. Sears will be in attendance at the screening. 8 p.m.
