Fifth Annual Empty Bowls Houston

You’ll get a meal, a piece of art and the satisfaction of contributing to a good cause at Houston Food Bank’s Fifth Annual Empty Bowls Houston, all for a donation of $25 or more — not a bad deal. Your contribution gets you a simple meal of soup, bread and water. Afterward, you’ll pick out a unique, handcrafted bowl — no Pier 1 wares here — from a selection of hundreds created and donated by Houston artists. For those who struggle with symbolism, the bowl serves as a reminder of the plight of the city’s less fortunate, who face hunger on a daily basis. (When you get your bowl home, we recommend displaying it on a shelf instead of actually filling it with food, lest it lose its meaning.) Last year’s event raised $44,500 — but the recession be damned, we think Houston can top that this year. Local blues/Americana newcomers Runaway Sun Band will provide the music. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two locations: Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main; and Lawndale Art Center, 4912 Main. For information, call 713-223-3700 or visit $25 and up.

Sat., March 21, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 2009
