Formed during the mid-'90s "Midwestern Renaissance" that brought us the Promise Ring and Joan of Arc, Wisconsin natives Rainer Maria wowed the heartland, then moved to New York City in 2000, where they earned their share of street cred. But the Big Apple didn't change the trio's gentle tone. If Sixpence None the Richer were still around (wait, are they?), Rainer Maria, named for the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, might be what they would sound like: innocuous and gentle. The group is touring in support of its newest album, Catastrophe Keeps Us Together. Also on the bill: The Format, whose self-described "desert pop" evokes their native Phoenix.
