"I knew about the pottery scene from the parodies and Family Guy, so I watched the movie to have the whole grasp of the story," says the actor who is now starring as the dead Sam Wheat in a touring production of the musical coming to Houston in February thanks to Gexa Energy Broadway.
The musical's plot is about the same as the iconic 1990 movie starring Patrick Swayze as Wheat and Demi Moore as Molly. Wheat still dies and hangs around as a ghost trying to save his love with the grudging help of a psychic (played by Whoopi Goldberg in the movie and she won an Oscar for the role). The movie was the hit of the year and the song Unchained Melody got a new life.
In 2011, Bruce Joel Rubin (who'd been the movie's screenwriter) wrote the book and lyrics for the musical with additional music and lyrics by Dave Stewart (half of the Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (co-writer on Jagged Little Pill).

"It's like a rock concert infused with this romantic story line," according to Douglas. "It's about what it means to love somebody and to take things for granted. Don't take your life for granted and not tell the people that you love you love them."
Douglas said many people have told him they like watching it live better, especially to see how the illusions - fairly easy to carry out in a movie - work on stage and the special effects employed as a person walks through a door.
