Gutenberg! The Musical

Who’d have thought that a musical about the inventor of the printing press could become such a hit? But that’s exactly what’s happened with Anthony King and Scott Brown’s comic song-fest Gutenberg! The Musical! The show’s about two guys named Bud and Doug, aspiring writers who’ve put together a backer’s presentation of their musical historic epic. With a stage full of baseball caps (to tell who’s who) and an inexhaustible supply of enthusiasm, they play all the characters, including a dude called simply “Old Black Narrator.” (The duo hopes the show won’t flop like their last project, Steven King, the Musical).

Critics have loved the quirky musical about making musicals. Even The New York Times called King and Brown “superb comic writers.” Happily, Houstonians get their turn to laugh it up at the sweetly silly show. The show opens at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, then runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 5 p.m. select Sundays. Through April 19. Theater LaB, 1706 Alamo. For information, call 713–868–7516 or visit $22 to $27.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., April 6, 5 p.m. Starts: March 14. Continues through April 19, 2008
