The Rice University Art Gallery is filled with large floating planks and rectangular boxes for “Joel Shapiro: New Installation.” But the brightly colored objects aren’t meant to deceive viewers into thinking the artist has defied gravity; instead, the point is to create an unfamiliar environment. The installation is a departure for Shapiro, much more whimsical than his previous works of grounded geometrical sculptures. The artist, whose work is included in the permanent collections of many museums around the world, and his assistants have been working on the exhibit for the last month.
