Keiko Matsui

Several years ago a young, delicate Keiko Matsui performed at Rockerfeller’s in Houston. Tiny and waifish-looking, Matsui sat at the piano and attacked it like a madwoman. That night she performed some of what was then the best in New Age jazz. That would have been impressive enough, but when she got up from the piano and strapped on a keytar (that is, a keyboard built like a guitar with an over-the-shoulder strap), she kicked it up a notch. Looking like a rocker and sounding like a jazz master, Matsui defied all the expected musical boundaries.

Matsui is back for one performance today. She’ll have her keytar with her, but what she plays might not legitimately fall under the New Age jazz genre tag. That’s because Matsui, one of the most talented jazz keyboardist/composers working today, skillfully blends smooth jazz with funk, Latin and fusion. 7:30 p.m. Dosey Doe Coffee House, 25911 I-45 North, The Woodlands.
